Zepsa Mini Case Study
Client: Zepsa
SITUATION
Zepsa, a premium quality architectural woodworking company, needed to produce several sections of ornate hand rail. The sections of hand rail were hand carved and needed to fit in several orientations and scales. There was no CAD data for the ornate hand-carved design, and it would take a master woodworker weeks to recreate the design in the different scales and orientations.
SOLUTION
Zepsa contracted 3DScanCo to help recreate the hand carved detail in the different sizes and orientations. 3DScanCo was able to 3D scan the complete hand carved railing and use the scan files to digitally stretch, scale, and re-orient the railing for the different situations. The extremely high detail and large size presented a unique challenge for 3DScanCo because the scans resulted in a large point cloud, around 30 Million points. By using using the powerful scan data handling capabilities of Rapidform, 3DScanCo was able to successfully process the data.
RESULTS
This project resulted in a great success for Zepsa and 3DScanCo. Zepsa was able to reproduce the hand carved detail in all of the necessary orientations resulting in tremendous time and cost savings. 3DScanCo also gained excellent experience in ornate data processing, developing techniques that are still in use on projects today.
